At 4:00 AM this morning my alarm shook me from a meager 4 hour "nap" for the evening. My first instinct was to throw my phone across the room and hope to put it out of its misery, but I (literally) rolled out of bed and got ready to head to Camp Wi-Ta-Wentin for a very early work day. How many people do you know who would get up at at such a ridiculous hour for the sake of spreading the word about what United Way has been doing in the Lake Charles community? I can safely say that I know seven.
Stephen, Kelsey, Kayla, Jackie, Jessica, and Erick (AKA "The Quackerjacks!") were nothing short of amazing. They were right there with us long before sunrise as we trudged through mud and rain to the campsite. Cheaptickets.com was setting us up to provide live coverage of our project to media outlets across the nation. News and radio stations from Atlanta to Minneapolis hooked up to the satellite feed from the camp throughout the morning as we hammered our way through sleepy eyes and caffeine depravation. Throughout the entire day, what impressed me the most was the attittude of our team. No one whined, no one pouted, no one even yawned.
While Keerun and I tried to set a good example by attempting to finish of one of our cubbies for the future campers, we literally looked up after 30 minutes of fighting with our drill gun to find that our Quackerjacks had finished off three units in the same amount of time. I couldn't have been more proud to be one of the TL's for such an amazing and dedicated group of people. You guys showed us what ASB is all about. It's taking one for the team and combining our energy into creating a environment that promotes helping those in need.
Hopefully our early start helped to shed light on the capability of young adults to not only believe in servicing communities but to get out there and lead by example. You guys rocked today, and I hope you get a good night's sleep tonight! You deserve it! :)
